During her performance at the 2019 Grammy Awards on Sunday, Dua Lipa donned a stunning Versace gown that bore a striking resemblance to the iconic dress worn by Liz Hurley in 1994. The up-and-coming British artist chose a daring black and white ensemble with intricate cutouts and embellished with safety pins, which perfectly complemented her wins for Best New Artist and Best Dance Recording.
Dua Lipa wore two Versace dresses at the event, with the first being a silver sequinned gown complemented by Bulgari jewellery and crystal-covered nails. Her second look featured an abundance of safety pins and was the talk of the town. Many compared it to Elizabeth Hurley’s black Versace dress from 1994, which she wore to her ex-boyfriend Hugh Grant’s movie premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Hurley’s dress caused a stir in the media due to its revealing nature and use of large gold safety pins to hold it together. In 2008, British department store Debenhams even named it the “greatest” red carpet dress of all time after conducting a customer poll. During her acceptance speech for Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards, Dua Lipa took a jab at Recording Academy president Neil Portnow for his comments that women “need to step up” at last year’s show. His remarks were poorly received by audiences and musicians alike, as they were seen as an explanation for the lack of female nominees and winners in previous years. Lipa acknowledged the incredible female artists she was nominated alongside and noted that this year, they have truly “stepped up.” For our picks of the best dressed stars at the 2019 Grammys, check out our edit.
